The Coast Guard motto, “Always Ready,” is inscribed below along with the date 1790, which was the year the U.S Revenue Cutter Service, an ancestor of the Coast Guard, was founded. The exact origins of the Coast Guard Flag are unclear. The current flag was adopted in 1964.
